The Hamilton Island Resort, a Popular Queensland Getaway on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Set to be Sold by American Private Equity Firm.
A major resort island situated within the Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a US-based private equity firm for a sum said to be worth A$1.2 billion.
“It is an honor to build on the legacy and commitment that the Oatley family has built in the center of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” said a company executive.
Details of the Acquisition Agreement
Headquartered in New York, the investment firm Blackstone – which also owns the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – confirmed it had signed an deal to purchase the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family, subject to standard regulatory approvals.
The sellers released a statement saying they welcomed the change in ownership of an island that holds a “special place in the hearts of many Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Scale and Features
Located almost 900km north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, the island covers over 1,130 hectares across two islands.
Approximately thirty percent of the area is built upon, featuring a substantial array of facilities:
- Five separate hotels
- More than 20 restaurants and bars
- 20 retail outlets
- An 18-hole championship golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A marina and a functioning airport
Hamilton Island is noted as a major job provider in the Whitsunday region, sustaining a sizable resident community and staff, as well as a broad network of local partners, suppliers, and local businesses.
A Look Back at The Island's History
The deceased Robert Oatley, a well-known yachtsman and winemaker, first bought the resort for $200 million in 2003 after spotting the island from the deck a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsunday passage.
The island's major development phase first began in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was characterized by simple iron huts and more humble quarters that housed domestic holidaymakers from inland areas and southern states.

Blackstone also owns luxury hotels and resorts in multiple countries, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro people. Its name comes from Captain James Cook, who navigated the HMS Endeavour through the archipelago on June 3, 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
